Chapter 1: Introduction

A DBTools.h++ installation consists of the DBTools.h++ core library and one or more DBTools.h++ access libraries. Each access library provides access to a specific database API; this architecture is explained in detail in the DBTools.h++ User's Guide and the DBTools.h++ Reference.

The DBTools.h++ Oracle access library described in this document provides access to Oracle7 and Oracle8 clients, but is designed to operate best with an Oracle7 Server. Oracle7 type mapping is used; for example, a string length of 2000 separates VARCHAR from LONG.

Some Oracle8 server features are not supported. If you use an Oracle8 Server, and you require Oracle8 features, we suggest using the DBTools.h++ Oracle8 access library.

Note: The section entitled "Establishing Connectivity" in the DBTools.h++ Build Guide describes important procedures that you must follow before attempting to build a DBTools.h++ application. The discussion in this guide assumes that you have completed the steps outlined in the DBTools.h++ Build Guide.
